Hibernation is a feature of Windows that doesn’t power off your office computer but instead puts the computer in a suspended mode after saving any open documents and settings for retrieval later. You can wake your computer from hibernation using any key on your keyboard and resume what you were doing within seconds. For reasons unknown, hibernation is not an installed feature within Windows 8 or 10 and you must enable it via Windows’ power settings before you can access the feature.
Sleep vs. Hibernate
Hibernation is different from Windows’ Sleep function in that the Sleep function doesn’t save any open documents and settings and consumes more power than placing your computer in hibernation. Sleep is handy when you just need to pause your computer for a short period of time to handle an issue in another room or run an errand. While your computer is sleeping, any open documents and applications are still running but are not saved to your computer's hard drive. Hibernation uses less power and is ideal when you know you won’t be using your computer for an extended period of time like overnight but you don't want to turn your computer off. Because battery power is critical to mobile devices, hibernating is better-suited to a laptop than a desktop PC; in fact, hibernation is unavailable on some desktops.
Enabling Hibernation Feature
To enable hibernation on your office computer, press “Windows-W” key to launch the “Settings Search” menu. Type “Power” in the search box to open the “Power Options” dialog box, click the “Change what the power buttons do” link, click “Change settings that are currently unavailable” and then scroll down to the “Shutdown settings' heading. Click the check box next to “Hibernate” to enable the feature and click the “Save changes” button - do not close the “Power Options” dialog box.
Setting Power Button
Once you enable hibernation on your computer, click the “Choose what the power buttons do” link on the Power Options dialog box to enable waking your computer from hibernation using its keyboard. Click the down arrow next to “When I press the power button:” under the “On battery” heading and click “Hibernate”; then click the down arrow under the “Plugged in” heading and click “Hibernate” also next to the wording “When I press the power button.” Click the “Save changes” button to finalize the settings.
Hibernating and Waking
To place your Windows 8 office laptop in hibernation, move your cursor to the 'Start' button and click it. Click “Shut down or sign out,” then select “Hibernate.” For Windows 10, click 'Start' and select 'Power>Hibernate.' Your computer’s screen flickers, indicating the saving of any open files and settings, and goes black. Press the “Power” button or any key on the keyboard to wake your computer from hibernation. The message “Windows is resuming” appears on your computer’s screen when the system is waking from hibernation.
Time to Wake
It takes approximately eight seconds for your Windows system to wake from hibernation. Do not shut off your computer during the waking process by powering off the computer manually or removing its battery pack - doing so could cause file corruption. Instead, let your computer wake up and retrieve any programs and settings it was displaying and using. Once your computer is out of hibernation, it is ready for use or you can shut the computer down completely via the “Power” menu.

Hibernation is a Windows' feature that's a middle ground between completely powering your laptop down and putting it to sleep. It uses less power than sleep, but it lets you boot more quickly than a complete shut down, and you can pick up where you left off.

Laptop hibernation helps conserve energy when you'll be away from your computer for some time. In Hibernate mode, your computer writes an image of whatever you're doing onto a file on the hard drive before shutting down almost completely. While it may take longer to boot up than when your computer is in Standby mode, Hibernate is ideal for when you'll be away from your machine for long periods of time but want to save your settings. Starting your computer after hibernation is as easy as pressing a button.
Step 1
Click 'Start' and then choose 'Control Panel.' Change the Control Panel so that it is in 'Classic View' by clicking the button on the left side panel.
Step 2
Select 'Power Options' in the Control Panel. At the top of the Power Options window, you'll see tabs. Select the one that reads 'Hibernation.' Click the box beside 'Enable Hibernation' so that a green check mark appears.
Step 3
Click on 'Power Schemes,' found at the top of the window. Set your hibernation settings by choosing how long your laptop will remain dormant before hibernation begins. Set by changing the 'System Hibernates' settings for both when the laptop is plugged into a power source and when it is operating on battery power. Click 'Apply' and close the window.
Step 4
Allow your computer to remain dormant for the amount of time that you've set in order to initiate hibernation. This allows you to walk away from your computer without shutting down or losing any work.
Press any button on your keyboard to wake your computer. On most models, this is sufficient and your computer will boot up automatically and return you to what you were working on. If pressing any key doesn't work, press the power button on your computer and hibernation should end. The way your computer wakes is dependent upon the manufacturer and model of computer you have.
